Nothing Changes If Nothing Changes!
When was the last time you did something for the first time? Every New Year, we make the New Year’s resolution to do things bigger and better each year (blah, blah, blah, you know the rest!) To be honest, if you want to get anywhere in your business or personal life, it comes with change. Another way to look at it is stop trying to do the same thing better!
One of my favourite quotes is, “Nothing changes if nothing changes.”
What could be more exciting and liberating than to consider the concept of doing things this year for the first time? When I asked that question to my team at Just Liberated, they really had to stop and think hard.
It’s easy, when we are learning new skills or trying the newest fashion cuts and colors, to be excited and inspired about new things. As we progress in business, career, and even our personal relationships, we can stop learning and growing because we unconsciously stop doing things for the first time.
When I ask one of my team members, nineteen-year-old Abbey, “When was the last time you did something for the first time ?” she said, “I know, just this past Christmas, I ate seafood for the first time, and I actually liked it!”
I asked her why she hadn’t tried it before.
I am sure a lot of us can relate to her response. She said, “Well, I thought I wouldn’t like it, so I guess I was judging that I wouldn’t, but because it was at the table, my mum has taught me that if it’s served up on the table to eat, you eat it!”
Hmmmm how interesting, I thought.
We all fall into that trap. If we have a choice, we opt out of trying things or doing things for the first time. When the choice is made for us, we have to try something new. Surprise ,surprise, we enjoy doing new things.
Keep it simple and have some fun with your work colleagues or family and friends and talk about what you are going to do for the first time each week.
